The “Uio detachment of the 599 545th marine regiment” or Mardet is a single military force with air, land, sea, and space divisions.
It gets it's name from the small federation marine detachment that was providing security for the planet when the destruction occurred.
The Uio detachment of the 599 545th marine regiment was a marine remote detachment formed around a core of a platoon, with some specialists added to allow for long term security duties on a non technological world as Bayaran was under terraforming and did not have the support infrastructure. The total force was 54 men and women.
The force was employing standard Federation long low intensity defense structure of having half the force in cold sleep and half in activity.
There are no records of what happened to the active part and why there was no full alert given causing the waking up of the rest, but the automatics woke up the next squad to be activated about three years after the destruction.
On learning of the events, they quickly surveyed the planet, tried to help where they could and attempted to contact the federation but failed.
About 7 years later they finally concluded that due to their small numbers and the huge losses they could not do much so they initiated “lost colony protocols” and most went back to cold sleep. They had two of of their members active at time with one person awakened every two years and spending four years awake.
The Mardets are one of the factions running things. They perform defense, major emergency response and planetary police force.
The mardets all specialize in different roles.
The current threats have caused Mardets to expand to five battalions organized into a division of two brigades. The fifth battalion is currently in the forming phases being about 2/3 staffed and is actively recruiting.
The base unit is a fireteam of 5 marines. Two fire teams make up a squad. One of the fire teams is usually led by a Marine first class and the other by the squad leader Sergeant. Total of one NCO and nine enlisted.
Currently Mardets try to make each squad have at least one person of each of the seven base roles, with the balance made up mostly of extra riflemen, but can be second of some other specialization depending on availability.
Three squads and a command section of ensign, sergeant and a communications man make up a platoon. Total of one officer, four NCOs and 28 enlisted.
Three platoons, a command section of a Lieutenant, sergeant and two communications men make up a company. Total of four officers, 13 NCOs and 86 enlisted.
Two or three companies make up a battalion. Federation used to have three companies to a battalion but three of the Mardet battalions only have two companies. In addition to the companies there is a battalion headquarters with about twenty people for transportation, purchasing and other similar tasks.
Two or three battalions make up a brigade. Federation used to have three battalions to a brigade, But the Mardets have first brigade with three and second with two. There is also a command section and a brigade headquarters with about thirty people.
The two brigades make up the division.
Before the current expansion the Mardets used to have one brigade with two battalions with a total of five companies.
The rank structure has following ranks. Each lower ranks also have a “senior rank”, that has no effect except for seniority.
Most Mardets are equipped for policing duties normally with a automatic pistol as normal weapon and have a shotgun available.
The expansion has caused a severe shortage of equipment and lot of the newer troops only get limited gear. See Mardet gear for current issue to newer troops.
